Walking Clinics
The Walking Clinics are designed to provide a better understanding of how to prepare yourself physically and mentally for long distance walking. Speakers such as medical experts, physiotherapists, nurses will share their wealth of knowledge on how best to prepare yourself for the long distance endurance walk. Participants will learn tips on how to pace yourself, kinds of food to eat or avoid prior to your walk, how to prevent blisters amongst others. There will be a Q & A session after the session. These Walking Clinics are especially useful for first-time walkers, walkers who did not managed to complete the 50 walk or 100km walk during their previous walks.

The Let's Take A Walk 2010 is just around the corner. As organisers, we are pleased to present the first walking clinic, Understanding Foot Health & Gearing Yourself for Let's Take A Walk 2010 to better prepare you for the real walk.

Our key speaker, Sam Randall, Podiatrist of The Foot Practice will share insights about how to choose the correct footwear for the endurance walk, give tips on how to prevent foot injuries and blisters and how to best prepare one for the long-distance walk. Vanessa McNamara, Senior Dietitian at The Food Clinic will also share her wealth of expertise on the types of food to avoid and consume before the walk and how to get one's body attuned and ready for the actual walk.

You can also hear from several Let's Take A Walk 100km participants from the previous walks as they share their personal experiences on their conquest of their long endurance journeys. There will be a Q&A session for participants to interact and seek advice from these experts and a reception thereafter. Minty lemonade and yummy hummus dip with crackers vegetable crudités await, thanks to our reception sponsor, Onaka, Healing Café.

About the speaker, Sam Randall, Podiatrist, Member of Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (MSCP,UK), The Foot Practice

Sam completed his degree in Podiatric Medicine with honours at the University of East London. After graduation, he worked in both the NHS (UK) and private practice in and around London. He moved to Singapore in early 2009 where he was based at the National University Hospital before joining the Foot Practice. Sam's experience also includes three years as a personal trainer in Central London. He has participated in a wide number of sports (including rugby, squash and triathlon) and built up an in-depth understanding of the needs of an athlete. His professional interests are in musculo-skeletal injuries, sports podiatry and paediatrics.

The Foot Practice is a private podiatry provider in Singapore founded by Australian podiatrist, Adam Jorgensen. The team comprises qualified and experienced podiatrists in Singapore from Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom. About the speaker, Vanessa McNamara, Senior Dietitian, The Food Clinic

Vanessa completed her Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Sydney. She has extensive experience in dietetics having practised in clinics in Australia, UK (NHS) and India before recently moving to Singapore. Vanessa is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (Dietitians Association of Australia) and a member of Sports Dietitians Australia. Her areas of expertise include weight management and behavioural change, diabetes and chronic disease management. Vanessa has recently joined The Food Clinic where she is spearheading their weight management programme.

Training Walks
Sufficient training prior the walk is important. In addition to your own training sessions, the organising committee of Let's Take A Walk 2010 has formulated a series of progressive training walks starting from September. These training walks are designed to condition your body and prepare you for long distance walking, familiarise you with the actual route for Let's Take A Walk 2010, make new walkers and ensure that you would be ready for the actual walk in tip-top condition. These walks are free and open to the public.
